Frequently Asked Questions

Who is having plastic surgery today and why is it so popular?
Today, people from all ages and from all walks of life are having plastic surgery done. Some of the reasons are that the procedures are becoming less invasive and the recovery time is generally shorter than it ever has been in the past. Also, cosmetic surgery is generally more accepted by most people and it is no longer seen as something that should be concealed or hidden away. The procedures are also reasonable to afford for most people; some can even be financed with easy monthly payments over 12, 24 or 36 months. [Top]

What are the differences amongst plastic/cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
"Plastic surgeon," "cosmetic surgeon," and "reconstruction surgeon" are terms that are often used interchangeably and can be confusing to most people. Plastic surgeons undergo many years of surgical training and are fully trained in both general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery. Plastic surgeons must meet stringent requirements to maintain their practice and are required to pass board examinations in plastic surgery and sometimes other specialties also. Cosmetic surgeons are surgeons (or sometimes even non-surgeons) from really any training background who have an interest in performing cosmetic procedures. These practitioners can be dermatologists, ophthalmologists and sometimes even obstetricians and gynecologists. The training of these physicians is sometimes very good and quite standardized; however, many times the training is done on an individual basis through elective seminars. Not all plastic and reconstructive surgeons concentrate their practice on cosmetic surgery. There are many aspects of plastic surgery, such as hand and burn reconstruction, which really do not involve the practice of cosmetic procedures. When considering having a cosmetic surgery procedure performed, I would recommend looking at the background of the practitioner and making sure that the practitioner is a board certified plastic surgeon, who, in his practice, specializes in cosmetic surgery of the face and body and breast. Is plastic surgery expensive?
In most cases plastic surgery procedures are quite reasonable; in fact, most are more affordable than ever. The procedures – including surgery center fee and anesthesia – usually range between $3,000 and $10,000 depending on the magnitude of the procedure and amount of post operative recuperation that is required. Our office accepts all forms of payment including credit cards and we do offer convenient monthly financing plans through several financing organizations. [Top]

Will plastic surgery be covered by my insurance?
Sometimes some breast reductions are covered by insurance carriers when there are symptoms such as back pain and shoulder and bra strap grooving of the shoulders. Most other procedures, however, are usually not covered by medical insurance and are financed in the usual manners. [Top]

Why is it important that my plastic surgeon is board certified?
Board certification signifies that the practitioner has completed a prescribed course of training, has actually practiced for several years, and his practice has been monitored by supervisors who deemed that this practitioner is competent and morally and ethically sound. [Top]
